Inner West Film Fest
IWFF

The Inner West Film Fest (IWFF) is an inclusive celebration of filmmaking and a uniquely Inner West experience. Only in its second year, it was vital this fledgling festival earned a place on Sydney’s highly competitive cultural event calendar. Our brief was to elevate the branding and attract a broader audience, while retaining the loyalty of the local community.

A film festival is not just about films. It’s a platform for unpacking complex shared emotions that move, nurture, challenge and inspire us. Led by the IWFF’s commitment to engage communities in an immersive film and cultural experience, we set about building a brand that would equally captivate and grow their audiences, wherever they were from. We began by articulating a new positioning for the brand – "A bit west of the usual film fest" – which carves out a unique space that is entirely ownable by the brand and promises an experience that is unexpectedly different. Visually we developed a strong mark that taps into the materiality of the film medium. The mark is a modern interpretation of film reel details, the colour palette draws its energy from the diversity of the Inner West community, bringing together four vibrant colours combined with a strong use of black. The result is a gritty boldness that’s reminiscent of the heyday of bill posters. Finally, we developed a brand voice that is confident and to the point, film literate without any trace of film snobbery and always ready to join in on the laugh.
